Ravers of the 90s: The Rave Decade

2017 Loyola Senior Design Exhibition

Before beginning this project, I knew I wanted to design something that expressed my love for electronic dance music and the scene that has developed along with it. Personally, I have always enjoyed the fashion aspect of this scene because there is no limit to what people choose to wear. I used this as my main inspiration to drive my project and form it into what I have presented here today. I chose to focus on a single decade, the 1990s. This decade, in particular, was a time that the electronic dance music scene truly thrived. It was an underground rave culture that welcomed all people and encouraged them to be themselves. After extensive research, I was able to understand what the popular rave fashion trends were at this time. I chose to recreate and organize several trends that were worn by different kinds of ravers in the 90s. From that, I designed three different deliverables that are presented here. I used 90s rave flyers as the driving inspiration for certain aspects of my design, such as color, typography, and graphic elements.

From the beginning to the end of this project, more than just graphic design was invlolved. I organized and art directed the photoshoot for all the photos that were used in the book. I also hunted down and gathered up all the clothes that were used in the shoot; some things were even hand made. I gained experience using a large format printer to print the 5 main posters. I used my motion design skills to create a looping GIF that was synced to music.
